<p style="">There has never been any argument in advertising circles that the most effective business advertising is word-of-mouth advertising.</p>
<p style="">That&#8217;s why direct selling is so dramatically successful as a method of marketing every imaginable product and service, and why direct selling is such a great business in which to be.&nbsp; As a direct salesperson conversationally telling another person why you like a particular product, you are much more convincing advertisement than any TV commercial or magazine ad.</p>
<p style="">The tremendous persuasiveness of your personal endorsement of a product is what word-of-mouth advertising is all about.&nbsp; Much to the chagrin of professional ad agencies, such word-of-mouth advertising cannot be purchased.&nbsp; But you, as a direct salesperson, can put this special type of advertising power to work for your business.</p>
<p style="">Because you are fortunate to be on friendly, personal terms with your customers, you can enlist their aid in promoting your services.&nbsp; You can actually turn your present customers into a personal advertising department.&nbsp; All you need to do is master the right way to ask for their help.<strong>&nbsp;<br /></strong></p>
<p style=""><strong>Develop Personal Relations</strong>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="">If you learn how to properly ask for their help, your customers will enthusiastically go to work advertising your business.&nbsp; This will help promote your services, lead you to scores of new services, and give you all the valuable benefits of word-of-mouth advertising.&nbsp; There are two types:</p>
<ol style="">
<li style="margin-left: 15px;">The customer actually becomes an advertising agent and tells others about you and the service you provide.</li>
</ol>
<ol style="">
<li style="margin-left: 15px;">The customer gives you referrals to people who may be good prospects and allows you to use their name as an endorsement.</li>
</ol>
<p style="">Either type can be extremely valuable in multiplying your customer list.</p>
<p style=""><strong>Avoid Pressure</strong>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="">The most important thing to remember is that this kind of help cannot be bought from your customers.&nbsp; It must never seem like you are offering a bribe in exchange for a list of names.&nbsp; As a rule, people will not &#8220;sell&#8221; their friends to you.&nbsp; Offering an &#8220;inducement&#8221; also might raise doubts about the quality of your services.&nbsp; If they are as good as you say they are, why should you bribe people for their recommendations?&nbsp;</p>
<p style="">Remember two very important things about human nature: first, people usually enjoy telling others about products they try and like.&nbsp; Second, people like to be appreciated.&nbsp; One way they get appreciated is by being helpful to others.</p>
<p style="">In short, offer an incentive for help without appearing to be paying for it.<strong>&nbsp;<br /></strong></p>
<p style=""><strong>Show Appreciation</strong></p>
<p style="">In this way, you&#8217;re thanking the person, not bribing them.&nbsp; They&#8217;ll be pleased, won&#8217;t feel guilty, and will be more willing the next time you ask.</p>
<p style="">The next time you call on that customer you should remember to again thank them for their help.&nbsp; Report to them on the reactions of the prospects they suggested.&nbsp; Let the person you know you did call on them, that Mrs. Jones did become a customer and purchased such and such, and that Mrs. Walters was interested but wished to purchase at a later date.</p>
<p style="">In many cases, after reporting these results, you can obtain a couple of additional prospects from them.</p>
<p style="">Prospects are the lifeblood of your business.&nbsp; Your greatest asset in direct sales is your inventory of prospective new customers.&nbsp; And there is no better way to maintain that inventory, converting prospects to customers, than by using the power of word-of-mouth advertising &#8230;with recommendations from your present, satisfied customers.&nbsp; Put this power to work now and watch your profits and your list of customers multiply.</p>

<p>How was your Valentine&#8217;s Day?</p>
<p>As you know, this was the day many romanced their mates&nbsp;<br />with chocolates, flowers and dinner.&nbsp; Kids in schools<br />would exchange store bought cards.&nbsp; And people &nbsp;<br />sent electronic greeting cards.
<p />Much different than it was twenty years ago when&nbsp;<br />people mailed letters and kids hand-made their&nbsp;<br />valentines.
<p />The other day USA Today wrote an article about how<br />the U.S. Mail is changing as we know it.&nbsp; How more<br />and more people are getting away from using mail<br />and sending email instead.
<p />Interestingly, the article happened to confirm what I&#8217;ve<br />said all along&#8230;that there is no bigger bang for your<br />buck than direct mail.&nbsp; While talking about using the<br />mailbox as &#8220;an advertising channel&#8221; here&#8217;s what they<br />had to say&#8230;&#8221;It&#8217;s an effective one; unlike commercial<br />e-mail, almost two-thirds of Standard Mail is read or&nbsp;<br />&#8220;looked at.&#8221;</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re doing the math, that is a 66% open rate&nbsp;<br />compared to the 10% or so open rate that is more<br />commonly seen in email.&nbsp; (MailerMailer shows a range<br />of 7.1% to 17.6%)</p>
<p>This is interesting because as you know from all&nbsp;<br />advertising, the trend seems to be to follow &#8220;what&#8217;s&nbsp;<br />hot&#8221; now.&nbsp; Right now, you hear a lot about social<br />media and mobile marketing.&nbsp; And how email is the&nbsp;<br />marketers best friend because the cost is so much<br />lower as compared to sending out physical mail.</p>
<p>If you look closely you&#8217;ll see examples of &#8220;follow the&nbsp;<br />herd&#8221; mentality within your own and other industries.&nbsp;<br />For instance, the trend in the automobile industry has&nbsp;<br />been to stretch out the length of the loans and lease<br />payments so as to offer the lowest monthly payment.</p>
<p>But one expert showed me some fascinating analysis&nbsp;<br />revealing how this works against the car dealer in<br />terms of customer retention and repeat business.</p>
<p>I talked to a top car salesman I know who said that he&nbsp;<br />made a point of showing customers 24, 36, 48 and 60<br />month schedules, including how much interest is paid<br />in each case, so as to encourage the buyer to take the&nbsp;<br />shortest term he can afford&#8211;because this gets the&nbsp;<br />customer ready and able to trade-in for a new car<br />earlier.</p>
<p>He also teaches his customers how to make small&nbsp;<br />extra principal payments on their car loans, so they&nbsp;<br />save money on interest and are able to trade-in<br />quicker.</p>
<p>This is a great example of taking a look at the&nbsp;<strong><br />direction the herd is moving, then looking&nbsp;<br />carefully in the opposite direction.</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>Same with &#8220;direct mail.&#8221;&nbsp; USA Today discussed the&nbsp;<br />decline of the mail system&#8211;showing that everyone<br />is moving away from using it, which in effect makes&nbsp;<br />a strong case for why you should use it.</p>
<p>Talking about the &#8220;mail moment&#8221; when people collect,&nbsp;<br />sort and open their mail, USA Today said that people<br />&#8220;love to receive mail&#8221; and then went on to describe why&nbsp;<br />people love to get the mail.</p>
<p>One interviewee, Tamra Lindquist wrote, &#8220;To this day,&nbsp;<br />I&#8217;m always a little hopeful when I open the mailbox!&#8221;</p>
<p>Rather than following the herd to quickly dismiss&nbsp;<br />direct mail and write it off as a dying breed, it makes<br />good sense to look carefully at every possible&nbsp;<br />opportunity for you to use direct mail in your business.
<p />When you match your market and your message and&nbsp;<br />wisely invest in the right media (and not just what&nbsp;<br />someone is pushing in your face nor following the&nbsp;<br />&#8220;latest trend&#8221;), you&#8217;ll differentiate yourself from your<br />competitors, make your marketing message stand out<br />from the pack, romance prospects, clients and customers<br />into opening more of your marketing and create higher<br />profits too.</p>

<p>It was April 17, 1964.</p>
<p>Tom Lease was just 15. Not even old enough to drive.</p>
<p>His neighbor across the street took his two kids and Tom to look at the new Ford Mustang.&nbsp; In fact, Tom got to go on a test drive in the brand new red 1964 &frac12; Mustang on its introduction day.</p>
<p>Tom says, &#8220;We were in a rural Northern California town, Lincoln, CA and it was as though people were spellbound when they saw us drive down Main Street. We felt like movie stars.&#8221;</p>
<p>This is from one of the more than 569 stories posted on a social website for Ford Motor Company.</p>
<p>Another story starts out&#8230;&#8221;My 35+ Year Love Story with Ford&#8221; and continues with all the &#8220;firsts&#8221; that occurred with Ford cars&#8230;from first dates to first car purchased after getting married to first car he bought for his kids that &#8220;also saved his daughters life&#8221;.</p>
<p>These stories have one thing in common. The customers loyalty to Ford automobiles.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not uncommon to see loyalty among automobile owners&#8230;</p>
<p>Like the guy who has three cars in the driveway, all Chevy&#8230;</p>
<p>The driver who will only buy BMW&#8217;s&#8230;</p>
<p>Or the neighbor who&#8217;s not only been driving the same brand of car for the past 40 years, but also has passed on this brand loyalty to his children.</p>
<p>Automobile companies understand that the single most expensive and painful thing to do is to get a new customer.&nbsp; And they understand the importance of creating loyalty in customers.</p>
<p>In fact, they even have an annual event focused on loyalty&#8230;The Polk Automotive Loyalty Awards&#8230;held every year for the past 16 years.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Incidentally, Ford took top honors this year including Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer; Overall Loyalty to Make; African-American Loyalty to Manufacturer; and Mid/Full-Size Pickup for its F-Series truck lineup, which has been honored in that category 14 out of the last 16 years.</p>
<p>The truth is though acquiring a new customer is the most expensive and painful thing in&nbsp;<strong><em>any</em></strong><em>&nbsp;</em>business, not just the automobile industry.<em>&nbsp;</em></p>
<p>And, it&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong>the barrier that keeps most people from getting rich</strong>.</p>
<p>Therefore, once you understand that your customers, clients, or patients are an asset that you want to hang onto, you will jump ahead in business.</p>
<p>So how do you create customer loyalty like what Ford has with its pick-up truck owners?</p>
